The wines of South Africa do not really need any introduction. We all know the great success that the wines have had internationally after the end of apartheid at the beginning of the 1990s. The country opened its doors and wine consumers all over the world had the opportunity to taste the full-bodied and fruity wines from the regions around Cape Town. And the quality is now excellent. There is a steady supply of good wines today. Many of the new wine producers are exceptionally ambitious. They make wines that can often hold their place in competition with other top quality wines from around the world.

As a wine country, South Africa is considered as The New World, but it is “new” with a long history. The Dutchman Jan Van Riebeek planted the first vines in 1655 not far from Cape Town.

Then came the Huguenots from France at the end of the 17th century. The sweet wines from Constantia were world famous already in the 18th century.

The climate in South Africa is similar to around the Mediterranean. We can expect very comfortable temperatures without excessive heat.

Preparation for harvest is in full swing and it is busy times in the wineries.

We will visit the famous wine regions of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, and also Hermanus and Walker Bay down on the south coast. The environment and climate are quite different here, but just as stunningly beautiful. The wines are also quite different.

We will also have plenty of time to enjoy South Africa as a country. We will visit the Cape of Good Hope and the Table Mountain as well as some other “must do:s”.

We will enjoy many excellent meals featuring the local gastronomy. We will have time to stroll around the towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch as well as the bigger city of Cape Town. And there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fabulous South Africa scenery.

The tour is led by one of BKWine’s wine and travel expert guides.

The tour is led and managed by Britt Karlsson, BKWine’s internationally well-known wine expert, wine personality of the year 2011, columnist at, and author of several wine books, including “The Creation of a Wine” that was named World’s Best Wine Book for Professionals.

Britt has also been wine judge in several wine competitions in many countries across the world, Chile, Argentina, France, Portugal, China and others. We will also have a local South African guide on the trip.

To go on a safari in South Africa is also a special experience. On this tour, we will visit the nature reserve at Cape Point but a safari is not part of this program. If you want to combine this tour with a safari we offer a safari add-on. See more below.

Program — Wine Tour to South Africa

Preliminary program.

There may be changes to some details of the program, e.g. which wineries we visit. As always on our wine tours, we put a great emphasis on that the visit will be exceptional and memorable. We do not always visit the most well-known or “famous” wineries (those that have half a dozen guides employed) but instead those that will give you a unique experience.

Day – – — Leave home

How you travel depends on where you start. Most long-haul flights are overnight so that you arrive in Cape Town in the morning. But perhaps you choose to arrive a few days early (we can arrange extra hotel nights for you). In any case, you should be in Cape Town on the morning when the tour program kicks-off, Day 1. (NB: See below under “flights” for important comments.)

Day 1, Saturday, February 15 — Arrival in Cape Town

We will go first to our hotel and maybe we can check in already. Otherwise, we will start with a light lunch and a few good wines.

After lunch, we will go back on the bus and head over to Table Mountain. Hopefully, we will be lucky with the weather so that the cable car that takes us up to the mountain is open (it is closed if the wind is too strong). From the top of Table Mountain you have a breath-taking view over Cape Town, the Waterfront and all the surrounding landscape and sea.

Late afternoon we will be back at the hotel. Check-in for those of you who have not already done so.

In Cape Town, we will be staying at 4-star Hotel Southern Sun Cape Sun, located in the city centre and shopping district, and also not far from the famous Waterfront district. The hotel has a gym, a restaurant, and a nice bar.

We will stay here for two days. Settle in, relax and then later in the evening it is time for our welcome dinner in the city. Our restaurant is close by; our bus will take us there in 10 minutes. It is a small and personal restaurant and we will enjoy the aperitif on the rooftop terrace with its impressive views towards Table Mountain. During dinner, we will get to know the local Malay cuisine.

Day 2, Sunday, February 16 — Day trip to the Cape Peninsula

After breakfast, we head towards Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the south-westernmost part of Africa. Here it is almost always sunny and very windy.

The entire tip of the peninsula is a nature reserve with an extraordinary flora and fauna. The famous South African fynbos, with more species than almost anywhere else in the world. There are ostriches, antelopes, springbok, baboon and much more. Do be careful with the baboons – they are very curious and grab every little thing or piece of food they can.

This is also where the Flying Dutchman supposedly sank!

We will visit the spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive, a recently opened road along the coast that clings perilously to the side of the cliffs. It takes us along the Atlantic Ocean past Noordhoek.

We take the funicular at Cape Point up to the historic lighthouse with a 360-degree view over the area. Definitely, and literally, one of the high points of the trip. Not far from there we stop at the Cape of Good Hope. Perhaps the local ostrich colony (!) will join us.

We will have lunch together during the day.

In the afternoon we are back in Cape Town and we make a short stop at the hotel. Then we go back on the bus and drive up to Signal Hill to enjoy the view of the city and of the sunset. There will be canapés and delicious South African sparkling wine. We will celebrate the beginning of the adventure!

After sunset the rest of the evening is free and a suggestion is to spend it down at the charming Waterfront, the old harbour that has been remodelled as a luxurious residential area and a centre for many restaurants as well as shops and museums, many also open in the evening. For those of you who want to experience Waterfront, the bus will drop you off there before going back to the hotel. It is easy to take a taxi from Waterfront back to the hotel later in the evening.

Day 3, Monday, February 17 — Somerset West and Elgin

Time to start on the wine! Today we will learn more about South Africa’s wine history. Not only the old history, also the new one, because we will also visit one of the newest wine regions in the country.

After breakfast, we depart from the hotel and we will go south-east, down towards False Bay.

We will make a first stop in Somerset West, which is in fact the southernmost part of the Stellenbosch region. Here the vines grow on the southern slopes of the Helderberg Mountains. Somerset West has become known primarily for its high-quality red wines from Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

We will visit a historically interesting wine estate that had its first vineyards planted in 1700. It is a very beautiful estate in typical Cape Dutch style with a stately park with old, magnificent trees. We will visit the vineyards and the cellar, and finish the visit with an interesting tasting.

Today’s lunch will be here at the wine estate, served in the shade of their unique camphor trees.

Our tour continues to the region of Elgin. Elgin has a relatively cool climate and winemakers here have therefore specialized in grapes that thrive in slightly cooler climates such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer. Elgin is known for its apples and is a relatively new region for wine. One of the pioneers here is Paul Cluver. He planted his first vineyards in the 1980s.

Late afternoon we will make our way down to the south coast of Western Cape and the small town of Hermanus. This is the wine region of Walker Bay. We check in at our hotel, situated in the town centre on the water front, Harbour House Hotel, a perfect location to explore the town with stunning views of the sea

Here we will stay for two nights. The evening is free for your own discoveries in this pretty little town by the sea.

Day 4, Tuesday, February 18 — Hermanus and Walker Bay on the South Coast

Today we will visit some interesting wineries here in Walker Bay. This is a relatively new wine region that has received much attention for its wines, full of elegance, in recent years.

Being close to the ocean means a cool environment for the vines and fine acidity and freshness in the wines.

The region is famous for its high-class wines made from grapes like pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.

Many of the famous names in Walker Bay are situated in the valley called Hemel-en-Aarde. It is a spectacular setting, between the sea and two impressive mountain ranges. There are a lot of excellent producers along the Hermanus Wine Route, for instance Hamilton Russel and Newton Johnson, both pinot noir pioneers.

We will visit three wine estates here. An interesting visit will be to Springfontein, near the small town of Stanford. Here they have a very creative winemaker and the wines are both original and interesting. Our gastronomic four-course lunch will teach us a few things about combining food with wine.

Early evening we are back in Hermanus and the evening is free to explore the small town and its restaurants.

Day 5, Wednesday, February 19 — Over the mountains to Franschhoek

After breakfast, we pack our bags and leave Hermanus. We are going north, over the mountains, to Franschhoek. It will be a great bus drive through a spectacular landscape. We will stop a few times along the way to look at some fabulous views.

Once in Franschhoek, “the French corner”, where the French Huguenots settled in the 1600s, we stop for a visit and lunch at a beautiful old wine estate that was founded at the same time as the Huguenots arrived. The entire estate is magnificent and classified as a historical monument. The new owners since a few years have brought new life and new energy into the wines.

After a tour of the vineyard and the cellar, we make our way to a beautiful, dazzling white building in Cape Dutch style. Here our lunch of local specialities will be served. But first an aperitif on the stoep (Afrikaans for porch).

We will make another visit here in Franschhoek in the afternoon. This visit will give us the opportunity to understand how an organic wine producer works in South Africa. Which problems do they have? How does their way of working influence the wine?

Late afternoon we arrive at the small town of Franschhoek. We check in at our hotel, Protea Hotel Franschhoek **** which is situated in the middle of the town. Here we will stay for two nights.

The evening is free for relaxation and maybe a walk in the town. There are many excellent restaurants in Franschhoek. Our hotel also has a restaurant.

Day 6, Thursday, February 20 — Franschhoek, the famous valley

Today we will continue to explore Franschhoek. We will do both winery visits and interesting tastings with the winemakers in Franschhoek.

We will go to Rickety Bridge and meet with their charming young winemaker Wynand Grobler. Wynand is a young but already very experienced and passionate winemaker. He will give us some close-up explanations of how he works. Perhaps he will even set you to work to do some “punch-downs” of the fermentation tank.

Wynand has been working at Rickety Bridge for ten years now, since 1997. His philosophy, developed over the years, is minimalist: don’t do too much in the cellar, let the grapes do the job.

For lunch, we will visit the Glenwood Estate. It is located in the beautiful Roberstvlei Valley and belongs since 1986 Alastair Wood. His winemaker is DP Burger, a big profile in Franschhoek. Glenwood has 30 hectares of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot and Shiraz. We will visit the wine cellar and we will have a wine tasting with DP. After that, it is time for an outdoor lunch in Glenwood’s restaurant Rendezvous. We will enjoy some fabulous food and some fabulous views.

We are back in town in the afternoon and you can spend the rest of the day shopping, enjoying an espresso in a café, perhaps a chocolate from the famous Franschhoek chocolatier, or in the pool. The evening is free to enjoy the restaurant of your choice. If you want to dine at one of the most famous restaurants in Franschhoek we recommend to book well in advance. We can help you with that.

Day 7, Friday, February 21 — Stellenbosch, the wine capital

Today we will begin exploring what is perhaps the most famous of the South African wine regions, Stellenbosch. Here we will find many of the well-known South African wineries. The town of Stellenbosch is a beautiful, lively and historically interesting university town.

Our morning visit will be to one of the top estates here in Stellenbosch. It was founded in the mid-1980s and focused from the beginning on quality wine. Now they make wines from Stellenbosch as well as from the cooler Elgin region.

We will also visit Oldenburg Vineyards in Banghoek Valley. This spectacularly beautiful winery is owned by Adrian Vanderspuy. He arrived at Oldenburg in 2003. Before that, he worked in finance. Even before that time, the property was planted with vines but it was all sold to the co-operative.

Adrian started to change Oldenburg; he focused on quality grape varieties and made his first vintage in 2007. His low yields give wines with concentrated fruit and excellent balance.

We will have a walk in the vineyard with the estate’s managing director and winemaker Philip Costandius. We will also taste the wines together with Philip and now we are definitely getting hungry. Which is good timing because one of South Africa’s famous chefs has prepared a fabulous lunch for us. We will enjoy both stunning views and the South African gastronomy. You can expect a variety of delicious dishes.

Late afternoon we will be checking in at our hotel in Stellenbosch, Evergreen Lodge, which is located in the city centre. We’ll stay in Stellenbosch for two nights.

The hotel is within walking distance to all restaurants, shops and bars. Stellenbosch is a lovely town and you will certainly enjoy a walk and the beautiful white Cape Dutch buildings.

You will have some time to relax before we meet again later in the evening for a traditional South African braai. A great number of things will be grilled on the barbecue!

Day 8, Saturday, February 22 — Stellenbosch

Today we continue to explore Stellenbosch. We will get to know some of the sub-regions of Stellenbosch: Banghoek, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills, Simonsberg. They all have their own specific terroir.

In the morning, we visit a winery that is considered one of South Africa’s major Pinotage specialists. This grape is South Africa’s very own grape. It is a crossing between Pinot Noir and the southern French grape Cinsault that was made almost 100 years ago here in South Africa. A good Pinotage is wonderfully fruity and spicy.

We will continue to the eastern part of Stellenbosch. The winery where we are going is located in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley. This is a small estate with 40 hectares of vines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the two most important grape varieties. The winemaking is inspired by Burgundy with open tanks for fermentation and manual punch down of the skins.

We will have lunch here, at the winery restaurant with breath-taking views. We will taste several wines during the lunch while we enjoy the food and the surrounding mountains.

After our delicious (and no doubt long) lunch we head back to Stellenbosch. You have time for shopping, or just stroll around and visit some cafés or wine bars, a swim in the pool or just relaxing. Early evening we meet for a farewell aperitif. After that the evening in Stellenbosch is free.

Day 9, Sunday, February 23 — End of the wine tour

Transfer to the airport in Cape Town to catch your return flight home. If you return home (not staying some extra days in South Africa) you will probably be catching one of the overnight flights that will get you home in the morning the following day.

We will have 2 transfers to the airport. One early morning transfer and one afternoon transfer for those of you leaving in the evening.

But perhaps you will want to extend your stay with a few days? (We can help you organise extra hotel nights.)

This wine tour is organised in collaboration with a local travel operator in South Africa. To assure the best possible organisation and a unique experience it is important with very good local knowledge, not least in South Africa. In South Africa, it is also a legal requirement to have a South African licensed guide on a tour. So on this tour, we will have two guides, each expert in his field: South Africa and wine respectively.

We have chosen not to include the flights in this tour. Here’s why.

We have customers coming from many different countries and even different continents. By allowing you to book your own flights it gives you maximum flexibility in how and when to travel.

Today it is also in many cases cheaper to buy flight tickets as an individual than as a tour operator (especially a small and very specialised niche tour operator). We have chosen to put all our effort into creating an exceptional travel program and still keep the cost reasonable, instead of including a flight booking service and therefore have to cut corners on the on-location program. In this way, you as a travel guest, get much more value for your money we believe.

We will do all we can to make it easy for you to arrange your travel and can also put you in contact with a travel agent partner if you want more assistance with booking flights. Do contact us if you have any questions regarding flight arrangements.

Booking your flight to South Africa

We suggest that you book a flight that arrives in the morning of “Day 1” (or earlier). Depending on your home location that is likely to be an overnight flight. In the morning of “Day 1” we meet in time for lunch. This is the start of the program. If you choose to arrive earlier, for example with a day flight, we can help to arrange additional hotel nights at our hotel.

Special booking conditions

For this wine tour special booking conditions apply, different from those in our general Terms & Conditions.

Cancellation of booking can be done according to the following:

  • More than 60 days before the beginning of the trip: the Traveller pays a fee equivalent to the Booking Fee
  • 31-60 days before the beginning of the trip: the Traveller pays a fee equivalent to 75% of the total price
  • 30 days or less before the beginning of the trip: the Traveller pays the full fee

Safari: a possible post-trip extension

If you would like to extend your trip to South Africa with a few days of safari please contact us. We can offer a 2 night safari in a malaria-free private game reserve in Eastern Cape.

It’s an hour’s flight time from Cape Town. You often get to see all of the Big Five: elephant, lion, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard although it is, of course, not guaranteed.

Golf in South Africa: a possible trip extension

If you are an enthusiastic golfer we offer you the opportunity to combine the wine tour with a few days of golf before the wine tour starts.

For a golfer, South Africa is a perfect destination. It has world-class golf courses located in breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. Climate is warm but generally not exceedingly hot, not even in summer. The sea is never far away in Cape golf country.

This is a golf experience that you can choose to begin your South African experience with, before you join the wine tour, or finish it, after the wine tour. You will have the opportunity to play on some of South Africa’s best competition grade golf courses.

Our aim is that you shall experience some of the best and most interesting that the wine region has to offer, both wine and food.

We put a big effort into finding and creating outstanding winery visits. Often it will not be the most “famous” and internationally well-known wineries that will give you the best and most unique experiences…

It is usually when you get to meet the winemaker or winery owner himself (or often herself) that the visits become really exciting. And perhaps we even meet the whole family at the estate.

You start discussing and start to understand what it is they do and why in the winery and in the vineyard. Maybe we will also have lunch in the winery or at their home. Need we say we invariably have private wine tastings at the wineries?

That is why our trips are not “jam-packed” with visits at wineries. Nevertheless, we often run short of time since the discussions – and the wine tastings – can easily become very engaging…

Our wine country tours typically include a mix of small family producers, exclusive boutique wineries and larger internationally well-known wine estates, all selected with great care so that it will give you a unique experience of the people and of the behind-the-scenes in the winery and a good understanding of the wine district’s characteristics, tradition and culture.

At the time of publishing a travel program, not all visits have been finalised. We are continuously working on improving the program. The domaines / wineries / châteaux that we visit on a tour may therefore sometimes differ from what was written in the original program. Wine and food are intimately linked. That is part of our wine travel philosophy; wine is an integral part of the gastronomy.

A wine tour with BKWine will therefore also be a gastronomic experience.

The meals that are included in a tour with BKWine are on a gourmet level and of very high standard.

Sometimes we will have a meal with a winemaker, perhaps in the wine cellar or at the winery, or even in their home. This is a unique experience that is generally not open to other visitors to wineries. It is an occasion to experience exciting combinations of food and wine while discussing with the people who made the wine.

Sometimes we will have a luxurious meal at a gourmet restaurant. At other times it may be not at a prestigious luxury address but at a local restaurant selected for its presentation of local gastronomic specialities, its atmosphere and its quality – a place where locals go. Or perhaps it will be a buffet lunch made at home by the winemaker and his wife. In all cases, we want to show you local gastronomic specialities and the local food and wine pairings.

Do not expect a picnic with salad and sausage from the supermarket and wine in plastic mugs… Think instead of a wine-and-dine experience with a menu designed by the chef for you with three or four courses and delicious wines.

A wine tour with BKWine is also a culinary experience both for the wine enthusiast and for the gourmet. A gourmet wine tour!

Customer protection and financial travel guarantee

BKWine AB is a Swedish-registered tour operator. As such BKWine has a so-called financial travel guarantee deposit with the oversight agency called Kammarkollegiet according to Swedish law as well as EU regulations. Thanks to this you can feel safe when booking your tour with BKWine. Our travel terms and conditions are based on the guidelines developed by the Consumer Protection Agency (Konsumentverket) in collaboration with the travel industry. The below information is required as specified by the travel industry oversight agency. All “packaged tour operators” are required by law to have this information in their tour programs:

“The combined travel services that you are offered constitutes a packaged tour in the sense defined by EU regulation 2015/2302.”

“Therefore you benefit from all the EU rights for packaged tours. The company BKWine AB will be responsible for that they packaged tour as a whole is completed correctly.”

“In addition, the company BKWine AB has, as required by law, a protection to repay your payments, and in the case that transport is included in the packaged tour, assure your home transportation in the case that they become insolvent.”

Health, vaccination etc

Our tours have no particular health requirements. However, on a wine tour, you are likely to be walking around in vineyards and in wine cellars, and visits and tastings may often be done standing up. Read more on this in our travel terms and conditions. Contact us if you have any questions.

Most of our travel destination have no particular requirements for vaccination, health or health certificates. What kind of vaccinations etcetera that may be required depends on your nationality and/or which country you come from, so it is impossible to give generally valid detailed information. Read more on this in our travel terms and conditions and contact your doctor, a health and vaccination centre or us if you have any questions.

Travel insurance

BKWine does not sell travel insurance. If you want travel insurance check if your regular home insurance includes some kind of travel insurance or contact your regular insurance company or a travel insurance specialist.

We are experts and specialists in wine and food tours and wine tourism, but also in wine from a broader perspective.

It does not matter if you are “a total novice” on wine and food or if you have life-long experience in the wine sector. We will give you a very special experience, in a way that no other tour operator can do.

We write in specialised wine magazines and one of our books has won the prize as best wine book in the world. We are regularly called on to be part of judging panels in wine competitions.

We personally visit some 300 vineyards every year. We have organised several hundreds of wine and food tours with an experience going back more than twenty years. We are invited as speakers at wine tourism and culinary touring conferences. Even the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the World Bank have as us for advice on wine tourism. We are proud to have been able to help!

Important information

Our groups are always small. The group size may vary, sometimes maximum 8, sometimes 20, but always of modest size. We do not do “minimum 20, maximum 45”. Check the details in each program. This is important since it guarantees a quality experience and a personal welcome at the wineries we visit.
